Holidays To Wilderswil - Bernese Oberland

Idyllic village, gateway to the glorious Jungfrau Region

The pretty village of Wilderswil is located around 4km from the centre of lively Interlaken and within a pleasant walk of Bönigen on the shores of Lake Brienz. Wilderswil perfectly combines a tranquil Swiss village atmosphere with the superb network hub of Interlaken just down the road, and hotel guests benefit from the FREE Interlaken Visitor's Card, allowing you to hop on and off the local buses and trains.

Laying beneath the towering trio of mountains Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, which stand like stately sentinels over this traditional village, Wilderswil is ideally situated as the gateway to the Jungfrau region and its impressive range of stunning trips and walking opportunities. Especially close at hand is the sunny plateau of Schynige Platte with its botanical Alpine Garden. Its little railway dates from 1893 and you can explore even earlier local history at the ruins of 13th century Unspunnen Castle. The historical white church of Gsteig is worth a visit as is the working watermill dating from 1513.

What to see and do from Wilderswil

Wilderswil boasts its own mountain. The Schynige Platte & Alpine Garden with its botanical Alpine Garden are reached by a scenic rack and pinion railway (end May to end October) which takes you up to over 1,300m. From here there are wonderful views of both lakes Thun and Brienz and the high mountains.

This peaceful village offers an alternative to staying in lively Interlaken which is only a short bus or train ride away. Interlaken has two small mountains of its own, Harder Kulm and Heimwehfluh and is the stepping off point for lake cruises - a must while you are here. The spectacular Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe and the Schilthorn-Piz Gloria cable car are easily reached from Wilderswil. There are also plenty of magical visits around Grindelwald and the Lauterbrunnen Valley, so you will never be short of ideas on where to go! Your journeys into the mountains are a joy in themselves, travelling on a variety of cable cars, funiculars and mountain railways. Please click here for our summary of the best the region has to offer.
