Scuol lies close to the border with Austria in the pretty Lower Engadin valley, with a long history of welcoming visitors to its thermal baths. Pure mineral water even flows in the fountains of the town's atmospheric little squares, with their typical 500 year old buildings and traditional 'Sgraffiti' decorated walls. Scuol also offers plenty of opportunities to try such specialities as Engadin nut cake or Salsiz, an air-dried sausage best enjoyed in thin slices with a glass of red wine.
While visitors should certainly 'take the waters' in this spa resort, there is a great deal to explore in the surrounding area, including the magnificent Swiss National Park. Both the Rhaetian Railway and the local Postbus routes have great connections throughout the scenic region and there are walks aplenty in the mountains, which can be reached by cable car. We highly recommend this quiet corner of Switzerland, with its proud Romansch history and culture.Â

What to see and do from Scuol
A trip on the narrow gauge mountain railways of the Graubünden region is highly recommended for some unforgettable sightseeing and perhaps a leisurely lunch in a picturesque alpine village. The Swiss National Park at Zernez has been preserved for over a hundred years, with a vast array of trees, shrubs and mountain creatures such as marmots and ibex.
Tarasp Castle is worth a visit - originally an Austrian fortress built in 1040, today guided tours take around an hour and include the knights' grand banqueting hall and the ancient bedchambers. Take the cable car up to Motta Naluns at 2,146m and enjoy truly beautiful views. There is a mountain restaurant at the top and the opportunity to experience some wonderful walks in the pure mountain air. Please click here for a summary of the best the wider region has to offer.Â
