Meiringen has a very interesting geographical position. Situated just along the Hasli Valley from Brienz, Meiringen sits on a sunny plateau between several mountain passes: the Brünig Pass which leads to Lucerne, the Susten Pass towards Wassen and the Grimsel Pass to Gletsch. There is so much to explore, with the variety of natural wonders characterised by water: ancient glaciers, glistening lakes, roaring waterfalls and bubbling streams. Meiringen offers a large range of hiking trails to suit all levels, with wonderful views of the Engelhorn, Wetterhorn, Eiger and Mönch mountains. You could start from the village or take the Hasliberg cable car to the Alpen Tower which has spectacular views and serves as the departure point for many hikes. Â
Meiringen also has a close association with Sherlock Holmes; the town even has a Holmes museum dedicated to the famous sleuth. Arthur Conan Doyle chose the impressive Reichenbach Falls for the setting of the final struggle between Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriaty. A traditional funicular will transport you to the viewing platform at the Falls - an experience not to be missed.Â

What to see and do from Meiringen
The Reichenbach Falls funicular was built in 1899 and transports visitors to the platform close to the thundering waters where the last Holmes battle took place. There are views over the Hasli Valley and this is the starting point for hikes into the Rosenlaui Valley. The Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge (Gletscherschlucht) is worth the visit for its thundering water, romantic grottos and bizarre cliff formations, as is the 200m deep Aare Gorge (Aareschlucht) where you can walk on platforms as the glacial waters of the Aare River rush beneath you.Â
One of the most scenic trips is the Brienzer Rothorn, the oldest steam-cog railway in Switzerland. At the 1,678m summit, you will be rewarded with fantastic panoramic views over Lake Brienz. Why not also try a lake cruise on the sparkling waters, or Ballenberg, a rural open air museum where you can enjoy traditional Swiss houses, gardens and craft demonstrations. For scenic mountains, lunch with a view and wonderful alpine walks, try the steep funicular up to the picturesque Gelmer Lake or the cable cars at Tälli and Trift. Please click here for more that the region has to offer.
