Holidays To Grindelwald - Bernese Oberland

Alpine village nestling beneath the mighty Eiger

Dramatic scenery, a friendly village atmosphere and four different routes into the mountains make Grindelwald a great destination for a summer stay. Situated at just over 1,000m, Grindelwald is sheltered by the mighty Eiger and boasts great access to the mountain paradise locations of Kleine Scheidegg, Grindelwald First, Männlichen and Pfingstegg. This is perhaps the ideal resort for visitors looking for outstanding views and wonderful walks.

Although Grindelwald is not traffic-free, it does lie at the ‘end of the road’ so there’s no through traffic and there are plenty of shops and inviting restaurants to try. Perched at the top of the valley, there are stunning mountain views to enjoy all around. You can sit amongst the alpine chalets, relax and breathe the pure mountain air.

What to see and do from Grindelwald

A great destination to enjoy stunning views with wonderful walks, Grindelwald is one of the starting points for the train to the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe - one of the most famous journeys in Switzerland.

A new delight is the Eiger Express - a state of the art cableway between Grindelwald and the Eigergletscher station - including close up views of the north face of the Eiger. From here you can enjoy the panorama viewing hall, embark on Eiger walking trails or continue onwards by rail to the Jungfraujoch.

In addition, Grindelwald has a delightful cable car to Pfingstegg where you can walk to the famous glaciers and the First gondola cableway to discover the Grosse Scheidegg-First-Bussalp region high above the village. Here you will also discover the amazing Grindelwald First with unforgettable views. The brand new Männlichen gondola takes you up to another beautiful area and the station has a sun terrace perfect for sipping a cool drink as you admire the scenery. From Männlichen, you can also take a cable car down to pretty Wengen. This makes a great day out, with your return by rail over Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald.

The village is well located for a scenic train ride down the valley to Interlaken to enjoy a lake cruise or you may prefer to sit by the quieter shores of Bachalpsee. This crystal clear lake is a gentle 45 minute walk from the First mountain station and offers Swiss lakes-and-mountains perfection. Schynige Platte is also within easy access via the train to Wilderswil. Please click here for our summary of the best the region has to offer.
