Nestled in a beautiful alpine valley and surrounded by waterfalls, Lauterbrunnen is one of the most picturesque villages in the Jungfrau region. It is ideally placed at 795m - a short railway ride up from Interlaken, with a mountain railway and a cable car available to take you up higher for walking, exploring and splendid views. Lauterbrunnen itself is simply delightful - a narrow high street lined with traditional chalet-style buildings housing hotels, charming cafés, and boutiques with everything you need for your days out in the mountains. Be sure to look up - you'll see the stunning Jungfrau mountains high above.
The Lauterbrunnen Valley has been welcoming tourists since the 19th century, keen to see this region of 72 waterfalls. Goethe wrote his poem 'The song of the spirits over the waters' after a visit. Tolkien came in 1911 and some say that this beautiful lush valley with its mighty falls and rushing stream was the inspiration for Rivendell in Lord of the Rings. Some of the most famous falls here are Staubbachfall in the village itself (one of Europe's highest free-falling waterfalls), the Mürrenbachfall dropping over
the 417m cliff, and the Trümmelbach Falls – 10
glacier waterfalls inside the mountain where up to 20,000 litres of water
per second thunder through the narrow gorge.

What to see and do from Lauterbrunnen
Lauterbrunnen is perfectly placed for many of the Jungfrau region's top attractions. One of the highlights of your holiday will be to visit the Trümmelbach Falls. A short bus ride from the village brings you to the visitor centre with its viewing platforms over the thundering waters. Take the mountain railway up to Wengen and then onwards to Kleine Scheidegg for fabulous walks and connections to the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe.
