Zermatt is a picturesque car-free resort high in up in the Matter Valley, nestling amongst stunning scenery of mountains and glaciers and offers visitors a fantastic panorama of no less than 38 peaks standing at over 4000m. The dominant mountain is the awe-inspiring Matterhorn which, with its distinctive shape, has become a symbol of Zermatt and of Switzerland. The village has retained its traditional style and gourmet reputation, with rustic stüblis, bars and over 100 restaurants. There is a great choice of high alpine visits available using the network of mountain railways and cable cars, and each offering humbling panoramic views that have to be seen to be believed. Superb summer visits include the Gornergrat, Rothorn and the underground Sunnegga Express.
To really enjoy the mountains fully there are superb walks for all abilities with more than 400km of marked walking and hiking trails. There is even a 'Gourmetweg' from Sunnegga down to Zermatt which takes around 1½ hours not including time to stop at two fine mountain restaurants in the villages of Findeln and Ried on the way.
Matterhorn Alpine Crossing
A new cableway connecting the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Testa Grigia-Plateau Rosa in Italy is now open. The Alpine Crossing allows summer visitors to make a journey which previously only skiers could do! Travel all the way to Cervinia and enjoy an Italian lunch.
