Highlights
The Eiger Express journey
An amazing journey! Enjoy the Grindelwald Terminal which has shops offering top Swiss brands, active wear for walking or skiing and plenty of delicious snacks. There are 44 gondolas on the cableway, with continuous departures transporting you up from the valley at 937m to the Eigergletscher station at 2,328m. The seats are even heated for your comfort during the winter! On the smooth route upwards you will be able to enjoy glorious views over the stunning countryside and even pass very close by the famous north face of the Eiger. Step out of the gondola on arrival and do take a while to experience the Panorama Hall with its awe-inspiring alpine views.Â
Many people will take the Eiger Express en route to their day on the Jungfraujoch, but this journey is a pleasure in itself and the beautiful area around the Eigergletscher is well worth exploring.
Exploring the Eigergletscher
There are fantastic walks to be enjoyed in the area. We recommend the intermediate Eiger Trail - this is a scenic 6km walk from the station to Alpiglen at 1,615m. The walk takes around 2 hours and leads across steep alpine pastures and scree at the foot of the imposing Eiger Wall, past a rushing waterfall and down to the mountain restaurant and railway station at Alpiglen. The views of the Eiger and over to Kleine Scheidegg and the Lauberhorn are stunning. Maybe stop for a drink in Alpiglen then take the train back to Grindelwald and change there for Interlaken.Â
An easier 1 hour walk takes you on a wide downhill path past the old Mittellegi mountain hut. A peek inside gives a fascinating insight into the spartan conditions which the original alpine pioneers experienced when they first tackled the Eiger ascent. You'll pass alongside the Fallboden lake. One part of the lake is only knee deep and benches in the water offer the chance for a refreshing footbath before you continue down to Kleine Scheidegg.
There are also more challenging walks from the Eigergletscher to be enjoyed and very experienced mountain hikers will enjoy the steep alpine trail to the Guggihütte at 2,797m.
Continuing to the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe
On arrival at the Eigergletscher station, you may wish to continue your journey ever upwards to the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe. Trains depart every half an hour and travel through the heart of the mountains to bring you to the famous viewing point over the mighty Jungfau-Aletsch Glacier. The Top of Europe railway station is Europe's highest at 3,454m! There is plenty to do here - try winter sports in the height of summer in the Snow Fun Park, cross the Glacier Suspension Bridge if you dare, marvel at ice sculptures in the Ice Palace, discover the history of Lindt chocolate or simply enjoy a meal with an unforgettable view. Don't miss the high point: the viewing platform at 3,571. From here you can take in the full vista over the Glacier in all its wintry glory.
The V-Bahn
The Eiger Express is just one section of the ambitious V-Bahn development in the Jungfrau region. The Eiger cableway forms one 'leg' of the V shape, while the new and much improved Männlichen cable car forms the other. They meet at the Grindewald Terminal, offering seamless connections from one to the other as well as rail connections to Grindelwald village and down to Interlaken.Â
The V-Bahn has reduced the journey time from Interlaken to the Jungfraujoch from 2 hours 17 to 1 hour 30 and from Grindelwald to Männlichen from 30 minutes to just 19. Relax inside the comfortable cabins and take in the beautiful views all around.Â
Directions
Take the half hourly train from Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald Terminal to connect with the Eiger Express.Â
From Grindelwald village, you can walk, take the local bus or travel one stop on the train to Grindelwald Terminal.
From Wengen, you can experience the full journey of the new V-Bahn. First take the cable car from Wengen to Männlichen, then the cable car from Männlichen to Grindelwald Terminal, then the Eiger Express. Alternatively, take the short train journey to Zweilütschinen and change for the train to Grindelwald Terminal.
Please check before travel for maintenance closures.Â
