Holidays In Zurich

A stylish city with the most charming Old Town

Zurich is one of the main gateways into Switzerland, and it is well worth spending a day or two in this unique city which enjoys a lovely location on the Limmat river, close to Lake Zurich. It offers wonderful restaurants and shops and over 150 museums and galleries. The Lindenhof is a great place from which to enjoy glorious views of the Old Town and beyond while Schipfe is a historic boatbuilding and silkweaving quarter, which today offers boutique shopping and strolls along the river. Augustinergasse is a beautifully preserved narrow street with oriel windows, while the atmospheric Niederdorf quarter is filled with shops, restaurants and bars. The Rindmarkt is also here, a medieval lane with the last gas-powered street lamps in Zurich.

There are many fascinating churches here; St. Peter’s is the oldest and boasts the largest clock face in Europe. The 13th century Fraumünster is worth a visit for its romanesque choir and Chagall stained glass windows, while the distinctive Grossmünster was home to the first Reformation preachers in the 16th century. The Swiss National Museum is fascinating and the Fine Art Museum features a large collection including works by Giacometti, Munch, Monet and Van Gogh. Rodin's seven metre high 'Gates of Hell' bronze door makes for a grand first impression! We also recommend taking a scenic river cruise - try boarding one of the boats at the National Museum for an enjoyable cruise along the River Limmat.

What to see and do

The famous historical spa town of Baden is close at hand and worth a visit. The thermal waters gush from 18 natural springs and mean that the town has been a haven for recuperation and relaxation since Roman times. Uetliberg is Zürich's local mountain and offers panoramic views over the city, the lake and towards the Alps. Try the 'Planet Trail' -  a 2 hour woodland walk from Uetliberg to Felsenegg that takes you past models of the solar system and boasts wonderful lake views. A short rail journey brings you to Schaffhausen, then it's just a short bus ride to one of the most spectacular sights in Switzerland. The Rhine Falls is the largest waterfall in Europe and visitors can stand on platforms which jut out over the river and experience the power of the water. The nearby castles of Laufen and Worth can also be reached by boat from here. More earthly delights can be found at the nearby Lindt Home Of Chocolate, with plenty of opportunities to try samples. The FIFA Museum in Zurich's Enge district is well worth a visit too: you can see the original World Cup Trophy and enjoy interactive footballing experiences.
