Highlights
Visiting the Castle
The lake side of the castle is where you will find the princely residential rooms while the mountain side is a true fortress with watchtowers, ramparts, a moat and turrets. You can take the tour of the castle at your leisure - a free brochure with map is available from the entrance and offers plenty of information on the historical details you will see as you explore. You can also hire an audio guide. Don't miss the 4 great halls (where the Dukes of Savoy held lavish banquets) the 14th century chapel and the weapons room.Â
Discovery Walk
So that children can also enjoy their visit, there is a new treasure map designed for 6 to 10 year olds. The map will guide them through the fortress and the different rooms in the castle.Â
Events
Temporary exhibitions are often held here, such as '1816-2016: Lord Byron's return'. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, the castle puts on 'Medieval Magic', with traditional music and dance, Christmas stories, falconry, artisan workshops and more. Visitors can also pause for a drink beside the roaring fire. nb Events usually incur a higher entrance charge.
Shopping
The castle boutique offers a wide range of books, toys and costumes with a medieval theme. Why not try the Chillon chocolate or tea. Of particular interest is the Clos de Chillon wine, which has been produced from the castle's vineyards for hundreds of years and can only be bought here in the castle.
Refreshments
There is a picnic area with vending machines inside the castle and a snack bar and picnic area just outside the castle entrance.
