Highlights
A very scenic journey
If you are travelling to Chur from St. Moritz or Pontresina, you will have the benefit of a beautiful journey along the UNESCO World Heritage Bernina and Albula Line. The journey from Davos and Klosters joins the UNESCO part of the line at Filisur. As well as the stunning natural scenery, there are a number of ingenious tunnels, bridges and viaducts to enjoy as you travel.
Historical Chur
Chur is Switzerland's oldest town and the capital of the Graubünden region. It has developed as a hub for the most amazing rail journeys into the high Alps including the Arosa Line, Bernina Express and the Glacier Express. Â
On arrival you will most likely head for the gothic Old Town where you can see towers and remants of the old city walls. Many merchant buildings with oriel windows date from the 15th and 16th centuries. Be sure to visit the 800 year old cathedral which has a wonderful, three-sided carved altar. The area around St. Martin's Church and Martinsplatz, with its narrow streets and pretty squares adorned with flowers, is an ideal place for a leisurely stroll.
Shopping and eating
Visit on a Saturday from May to October and you'll find a colourful market where farmers from all over the Graubünden region proudly display their produce - look out for the Bünderfleisch air dried meats and local cheeses which are a real delight. Modern shopping and a huge variety of excellent restaurants all help to make Chur an enjoyable year round destination.
Arosa Line journey
If you have time, you may like to take the scenic Arosa Line train which departs from the very centre of Chur. The delightful journey lasts an hour and transports you up to the alpine resort of Arosa.Â
Directions
There are regular daily trains running to Chur from St. Moritz, Pontresina, Davos, Klosters and Arosa.
You can also easily travel by bus from Lenzerheide and Flims-Laax.
