Portillo's Switzerland Railway Journeys

Highlights of the BBC series Great Continental Railway Journeys

Following the glorious scenes of Switzerland captured in Michael Portillo's latest 'Great Continental Railway Journeys' series, we are delighted to highlight some of our favourite locations shown in the programmes.

The episodes can be found on BBC iPlayer and we do recommend taking a look. As well as the fantastic views of lakes, mountains and rail journeys, there is a wealth of interesting content describing Switzerland's journey from impoverished rural communities through a boom in 19th century tourism - thanks to the advent of the railways - to a country which is now a world-leader in technology and engineering.

Our expert team can help you with tailor-made holidays incorporating any of the locations shown here ... you could even recreate Mr. Portillo's journey across Switzerland and see them all!

A monumental ancient landslide dammed the river but the power of the water pushed through and over centuries created this awe-inspiring gorge. There are several walks which afford amazing views, such as one to take you to the 12.5m observation deck 'Il Spir' for a bird's eye view. You can enjoy views from points nearer to rail stations and of course there are plenty of opportunities for boating and kayaking on the river itself.
