Winter Walking In Switzerland

Route: Adelboden - Hörnli - Adelboden. On the sunny side of Adelboden, this path offers beautiful views of the Hörnli. The path leads down the valley from the village, upwards past the typical Schlegeli chalets and glistening snowfields, then through the forest to Taubenfels Rock. The path is well signed and a fantastic mountain panorama opens up giving fantastic views. This circular route is a favourite Sunday afternoon walk for Adelboden locals.

Length of walk: 5km     Highest point: 1,578m

Route: Cable car to Männlichen - walk to Kleine Scheidegg - train to Grindelwald. This winter hike is suitable for young and old. From the 2,230m high Männlichen, an easy trail leads over the scenic highland path in a southerly direction as you make your way downhill to Arvengarten. Then it is up to Kleine Scheidegg, which lies at an altitude of 2,061m and has a mountain restaurant offering warm drinks before your train ride home on the Jungfrau railway.

Route: Train to Grütschalp - walk to the Bletschenalp -  walk back to Mürren village. Over millions of years the glaciers created a vast canyon which you can view from this high-altitude trail running almost 1,000 metres above the valley floor. As well as the amazing views below you, there is the magnificent panorama of the Jungfrau peaks. The trail leads through the silent winter forest and the meadows covered by deep snow to delightfully sunny Winteregg and back into Mürren.

Route: Walk to Hannig - cable car back to Saas-Fee. Towering high above Saas-Fee are some of Switzerland's mightiest peaks and you can enjoy magnificent panoramic views of them from the sunny Hannig plateau. The ascent from Saas-Fee is steep in places but the views from the top make it well worth the effort. Simply follow the zig-zag path from the Hannig cable car valley station up to Alpenblick restaurant and onwards to the mountain station.

Route: Cable car to Sunegga - walk to Findeln - arrive in Zermatt. The majestic 4,478m Matterhorn is one of the most famous peaks in the Alps. This winter hike from Sunnegga to Zermatt via the picturesque village of Findeln has stunning views of the mountain the whole way, so you can really appreciate its beauty. The trail is an easy, downhill walk and you can even stop in a mountain restaurant along the way for a warm drink before continuing your journey.

Route: PostBus to Silvaplana - walk to Sils-Maria & Maloja - PostBus to St. Moritz. This is a flat walk amidst the mountain scenery which takes in two beautiful lakes. You'll follow the shore of Lake Silvaplana and when you reach the Chastè peninsula the trail takes you onto frozen Lake Sils - truly a unique hiking experience! Weather permitting, there is a small bar that operates in the middle of the lake. The walk continues on to the village of Maloja, where the bus takes you back to St. Moritz.

Length of walk: 13km          Highest point: 1,815m above sea level

Route: Walk to Litzirüti & the Langwieser Viaduct - train back to Arosa. Affording magnificent views of the frozen reservoir, the trail leaves Arosa and runs through the pretty Schanfigg Valley. You'll follow the path of the Plessur River to the old village of Litzirüti. From here on, the route continues through the quiet winter forest until you reach the famous Langwieser Viaduct. Pass under this mighty structure to reach Langwies station and your train back to Arosa.
