Highlights
Journeys to the mountain
The 8 person gondola cable car whisks you from the village of Saas Grund at 1,559m to the Kreuzboden station at 2,400m. You can spend time here or head up again to Hohsaas. This journey is via another cable car and will bring you to a world of glaciers at 3,200m. There are fabulous views from both cable cars during your journeys.
Refreshments
At Kreuzboden, steps from the cable car station you will find the mountain restaurant. You can relax here and enjoy a glass of Valais wine while admiring the views from the panoramic sun terrace. There's plenty of freshly prepared choice on the lunch menu including rosti and other traditional Swiss dishes.
Another option is to enjoy a picnic beside the Kreuzboden Lake, or cook lunch on the barbecues which you can find at Hohsi-Land.
Up at Hohsaas, you could treat yourself to a delicious apple strudel with vanilla sauce and wonderful views at the mountain restaurant.
Walking
There are some delightful trails leading from Kreuzboden. Try the Alpine Flower Trail, which takes around 3 hours. Depending on the month, you'll see up to 240 different species of flowers including edelweiss and gentian and thousand year old larches. The trail takes you past Triftalp, where cheese is still produced in the mountain dairy. A zigzag trail then leads down through an enchanting forest, reaching the Triftbach waterfall and finally a beautiful old part of Saas Grund.
You could try the Wellness and Pleasure Trail, which is a picturesque 1 hour walk. The trail starts out at Kreuzboden and heads north to the beautiful Kreuzboden Lake, where walkers can enjoy a majestic view of the Mischabel massif. The circular route begins at one end of the lake and leads over a hanging bridge (optional). There are quiet spots with hammocks and deck chairs en route and a picnic area with barbecue and a Kneipp hydrotherapy facility.
At Hohsaas, there is a high altitude but gentle 1.4 km circular route on which you can admire the 18 magnificent 4,000-metre peaks that surround the Saas Valley. Information boards outline various features of the summits as well as facts about the glaciers and flora and fauna. The trail also features the 'Wunsch-Steinmann' wishing cairn, where you can make a wish by adding your own stone to the cairn.
Hochsi-Land family park
Close to the Kreuzboden station is Hochsi-Land which features a fantastic adventure plaground with a 13m long slide. There is also a petting zoo with pot-bellied pigs and pygmy goats and a splash park. You can relax and enjoy the views while the children play, or start a barbeque lunch. The picturesque lake is close at hand.
'Monster' Trotti bikes
A thrilling ride down from Kreuzboden to Saas Grund, winding down over 11 kilometres amidst beautiful scenery! This activity is payable locally.Â
