Highlights
Walking
The Hannig lies at 2,350m above sea level and offers fantastic vistas of the Mischabel chain's 4,000m peaks. At the top station of the gondola cable car there is a playground and, depending on the time of year, goats to pet and marmots to spot.Â
A very pleasant mountain walk is the Sun Trail. This themed trail features plenty of interesting information boards along the way and takes about 1½ hours. The wide path sets off in a southerly direction from the Hannig mountain station and walkers eventually reach Café Alpenblick, nestled in the middle of the larch forest. The zigzag path back down to Saas-Fee starts from behind the café.
A more demanding 4 hour hike is the Ibex Trail. From the top station, folow the woodland path to Mällig with wonderful views over the Saas Valley and the Alps. Then it is a flat walk past Gebidum followed by a steep descent to join the Saas-Fee-Grächen high-altitude trail. The remainder of the hike is a pleasant, gentle descent that leads past Senggboden and Bärenfalle before finishing back in Saas-Fee. This is a popular area for ibexes and quiet walkers are often rewarded with the chance of a close-up photo.
Refreshments
At the top station you will find the restaurant which offers homemade soups, rosti, grilled meat dishes and a children's menu. Best of all is the sun terrace with its amazing views over the high mountains.Â
Try the traditional Alpenblick mountain restaurant, which you can walk down to from the Hannig station. With a wooden sun terrace and a view of the larch forest you can relax and enjoy the hearty food -Â dried meat platters, barley soup, Alpine macaroni, cheese fondue, homemade apple strudel and nut gateaux.
There are plenty of pretty spots in which to enjoy a picnic, or you can light a barbecue if you walk down to Hohnegg.Â
Trotti bikes
You can hire these fun scooter bikes and enjoy a thrilling descent from Hannig to Saas-Fee. The 5.5km natural road takes you through magnificent landscapes on your rapid route down to the valley.
