Highlights
Territet by the lake
Territet lies on the shore of Lake Geneva, half way between Montreux's centre and the Chateau de Chillon. You can walk along the quay, enjoying the views of the water, the statues and the gorgeously colourful flowers.Â
This small community was once a calling point for the Orient Express and often played host to the Austrian Royal Family - today there is a statue to Empress Elizabeth ('Sissi') in the Rose Garden. Enjoy the Belle Époque buildings, or take lunch by the water in the Contretemps restaurant.
Glion - fantastic viewing point over the lake
Glion is an idyllic village in the hills above Montreux and Lake Geneva and offers amazing views over the water and to the mountains beyond. Enjoy the Swiss charm, the views and maybe take a scenic walk through the meadows. Afterwards you could continue upwards to Les Rochers-de-Naye.
The village is also home to the prestigious Glion Institute of Higher Education, dedicated to superlative training in hospitality and leisure management.
Spoilt for choice for lunch
On arrival at Glion station, you will immediately see the Buffet de la Gare. This amazing restaurant offers a warm welcome and prides itself on using very local produce for its dishes. The fish comes from Lake Geneva, the meat and vegetables from the village of Puidoux, the bread from a bakery in Chernex, the fresh pasta is made in Montreux and the cheeses come from farms all over the Lake Geneva region. Most of the wine comes from the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces. There are spectacular views over the lake! Open for lunch and dinner Thursday-Monday.
A little further along is the restaurant of the Glion Institute. Book a table here for exquisite food, impeccable service and a panoramic view over the lake. The Bellevue restaurant has been awarded 16 points in the Gault & Millau fine dining guide and also has a contemporary lounge and cocktail bar in which you can relax. Open for lunch and dinner Monday-Friday. Â
Walking in the region
There is a delightful 4.5km circular trail from Glion which takes around an hour and a half on a gentle walk. There are bucolic meadows and sparkling streams with pretty bridges crossing them, wooded areas and views of the valley. We recommend follow the trail during May to experience the amazing sight of vast fields of delicate narcissi!Â
As an alternative, you can also take the 10 minute train journey from Glion on to Caux, and enjoy another scenic circular trail from there.
Directions
You can enjoy a leisurely walk from Monteux to the Territet funicular station, or take the bus if you prefer.
If you are coming from Vevey or Lausanne, it's a short train journey to Montreux or you could even arrive by lake boat at the Territet pier.
Please check before travel for maintenance closures.Â
