Brexit Information For Switzerland Holidays

For Switzerland, your passport must be:

• issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
• valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

You will be able to travel to countries in the Schengen area (Switzerland is part of the Schengen area) for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa as a tourist and to visit family or friends. 

At border control for Switzerland, you may need to:

• show a return or onward ticket
• show you have enough money for your stay, and
• use separate lanes from EU, EEA and Swiss citizens when queueing (‘all passports’)

Your passport may be stamped on entry and exit.

You should always get appropriate travel insurance with healthcare cover before you go abroad.

You can use the UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) in Switzerland if you're a UK national, a Swiss national or a citizen of an EU member state. You may be asked for proof of your nationality or your status when using your UK GHIC in Switzerland. The Card should NOT be relied on as a substitute for adequate health insurance. 

UK driving licences will be valid in Switzerland and the International Driving Permit will not be required in order to drive a motor vehicle in Switzerland.

Drivers with valid UK licence plates will not have to present an international motor insurance certificate (Green Card) when entering Switzerland and driving in Switzerland.

Roaming charges were abolished in 2017 for countries in the EU and EEA based on EU law.

However, this law does not apply to Switzerland and free mobile phone roaming was never guaranteed for Switzerland. Whether roaming charges apply or not, depends on the respective plans offered by your mobile provider.
