This scenic alpine village has preserved its charm with traditional wooden chalets and is set in a wide valley with the mountains dominating the skyline. Kandersteg has the quieter and unhurried feel of a resort not yet on the skiing map, however, for the beginner and intermediate skier it offers great value and a good range of skiing. It may prove less challenging for the thrill seeking advanced skier, but the sheer charm of the village and picturesque surrounding landscape will be appreciated by all.

Kandersteg is the ideal place to wind down and enjoy the unspoilt scenery. It is also renowned for its scenic winter walking trails.

The Kandersteg ski area

Kandersteg comprises two relatively small ski areas, Oeschinen and Sunnbüel. The combined lift pass allows free use of the ski buses between these areas.

Oeschinen with wonderful views up to the Bluemlisalp mountains, is based around the mountain lake (famous for ice-fishing) and is excellent for beginners and intermediates. There are 9km of prepared pistes with snow machines on hand to ensure continuous good skiing. There are also two cosy mountain restaurants to discover. The last 800m of the long toboggan run down to the village is floodlit every night.

Sunnbüel is a delightful ski area which is reached by cable car and is set on a plateau at 2,000m. With 6km of normally quiet, prepared pistes it is ideal for families and beginners. There is a mountain restaurant with great views of the winter landscape - not only a unique experience for downhill skiers but also for cross-country skiers and winter hikers.

Après ski in Kandersteg

Kandersteg has a relaxed and informal après ski scene, which is generally concentrated around the hotels and restaurants. There is a friendly atmosphere in the bar at the Hotel Adler and it is always worth popping in to the ski bar at the Victoria Ritter - this is the place to meet in Kandersteg with its English pub style and live music.

You could go bowling in the Bluemlisalp, while those who like the idea of an evening of live music from a traditional Swiss folk group should head to the Alpenblick.
