This is a must do excursion. The famous Schilthorn mountain has the Alps' first revolving restaurant - Piz Gloria - and boasts the most amazing views of the Jungfrau region, including the famous UNESCO World Heritage trio of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains. It is even famous for being host to one of the 007 James Bond films 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' and there is an exhibition dedicated to the film with a 'Touristorama' showing you extracts of the movie. The Schilthorn is open all year and offers the most spectacular 360 degree panorama in the Alps.

Highlights

Skyline viewing platform

Enjoy the spectacular view of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau (protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and more than 200 other summits.

Revolving restaurant

Simply stunning views can be enjoyed from the revolving restaurant or from the big terraces that surround it. It takes approximately 45 minutes for the whole restaurant to rotate 360 degrees. It has a panorama which spans from Mount Titlis, Jungfrau, Mönch, Eiger, over the Bernese Oberland and the Jura mountains up to the Vosges mountains and the Black Forest. On a clear day Mont Blanc is also just visible.

007 Bond World and Walk of Fame

Follow the trail of James Bond, with clips from the 1969 movie 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' filmed on the Schilthorn. It also gives details of how the set and stunts were created and there is a selection of James Bond memorabilia sold in the souvenir shop. The Walk of Fame takes you past memorabilia from the film's cast and crew and you can test your own Bond skills such as the expert hat-toss in Miss Moneypenny's office and a helicopter simulator chase.

Skyline Thrill at Birg

The mid-station at Birg sits 2,677m above sea level and about 1,000m above the village of Mürren. It is the ideal starting point for hikes and boasts two special experiences. The Thrill Walk leads down into the vertical walls of the imposing rock massif; visitors walk along a 200m cliff pathway under the Birg cableway station. The Skyline Walk opens up new perspectives on a platform situated over a vertical precipice, offering exhilarating panoramic views! There is also a bistro here with a spacious sun terrace.

**Please note that the Thrill Walk is currently closed due to the new cable car construction**

Hiking trails

There are various hiking routes available from the Schilthorn. If you're looking for a short walk you can hike from the Schilthorn down to the middle station, Birg, or for the more enthusiastic hikers...keep going all the way back down to either Allmendhubel or Mürren.

The classic 'James Bond 007 breakfast buffet'

Why not treat yourself to something different and experience the delicious James Bond breakfast. Start the day with a glass of sparkling Prosecco or Rimus (non-alcoholic) at 2,970m above sea level! The very popular buffet breakfast is served daily from 08.00-10.30 in the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant.

Schilthorn Cableway 20XX

This amazing construction project will provide a direct connection between Stechelberg and Mürren, the replacement of the cable cars on the Mürren-Birg and Birg-Schilthorn routes and the reconstruction of all the stations. The Schilthorn will be closed between October 2024 and March 2025.

The construction work has no effect on railway operations or restaurant services on the Schilthorn for summer 2024. However, for safety reasons, the Thrill Walk at the Birg station is temporarily closed or only partially accessible.

Developments:

  • Opening direct connection Stechelberg – Mürren: November 2024
  • Opening of the route Mürren – Birg : December 2024
  • Opening of the route Birg – Schilthorn: March 2025
  • Completion of the entire project: 2026

Directions

Travel to Lauterbrunnen, then the cable car takes you to Grütschalp where you board a train to Mürren. From Mürren, there is a short walk through the village where you take a cable car to Birg and onto a connecting cable car to the Schilthorn. It takes just 30 minutes by cable car from Mürren to reach the summit of the Schilthorn at 2,970m.

Please check before travel for maintenance closures.
