Holidays in Vevey - Lake Geneva (Vaud)

Lakeside charm and wonderful alpine vineyards

Vevey lies just along the lakeshore from Montreux and rivals its larger neighbour for both charm and breathtaking views. A lovely Old Town affords many opportunities for boutique shopping and people watching from the elegant cafés, perhaps followed by a stroll under the palm trees by the water’s edge.

Along the lakeside promenade, you’ll find a charming monument dedicated to the comedian Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin became one of Vevey’s most famous residents, spending the last 25 years of his life in this idyllic town by the lake. The fantastic Chaplin's World Museum is set in his former home and gardens. Vevey is also home to Nestlé - in fact the world's first milk chocolate was created here in 1875. Visitors can enjoy the company's Alimentarium - an entertaining and interactive museum dedicated to food and nutrition. Not far from Vevey are several beauty spots, perfect for scenic walks. Recommendations include Mont-Pèlerin, Les Pléiades and the vineyards at Lavaux.

La Tour-de-Peilz is a small lakeside village on the edge of Vevey, perfect for a tranquil holiday by the lake. This charming village has a 13th century castle, which now houses the Swiss Games Museum, and there is a small marina. The promenade links La Tour-de-Peilz with Vevey, a pleasant stroll of around 20 minutes - or you can take the frequent bus. Hotel guests in both resorts benefit from the FREE Montreux Riviera Card, allowing you to hop on and off the local buses, trains and funiculars.

What to see and do

Vevey is the perfect spot from which to explore this stunning region, using the small trains and funiculars that wend their way through the alpine pastures and vineyards. Two journeys leave directly from Vevey: Mont Pèlerin, close to the wine village of Chardonne, and Les Pléiades with its stunning views. A cruise on a paddle steamer is also a must, taking in the magical panorama of the villages and resorts of Lake Geneva. The fascinating Chillon Castle lies just along the lake in one direction, and in the other you can see a Le Corbusier house recognised as a World Heritage Site.

With the transport network you can take trips on the lake and up to the mountains with ease. Les Rochers-de-Naye is a popular destination, a lovely spot with fabulous views. If you want a true alpine experience, head for Glacier 3000 where you can enjoy beautiful views and snow fun all year round. There are also some very special train journeys including the nostalgic Cheese Train with its demonstration and fondue lunch and the Chocolate Train taking in Gruyères and the Nestlé-Cailler factory. Please ensure that you pre-book these popular journeys with us to avoid disappointment. Click here for our summary of the best the region has to offer.
