From 1 January 2021 the required passport validity is as follows:


  • you must have at least 6 months' validity left on an adult/child passport after your intended date of departure
  • your passport validity is now 10 years from the date of issue. Please check as this could be different from the actual validity date shown.

You should always get appropriate travel insurance with healthcare cover before you go abroad.

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will not be valid in Switzerland from 1st January 2021.

Driving Licence

UK driving licences will be valid in Switzerland and the International Driving Permit will not be required in order to drive a motor vehicle in Switzerland.

Drivers with valid UK licence plates will not have to present an international motor insurance certificate (Green Card) when entering Switzerland and driving in Switzerland.

Mobile roaming

Roaming charges were abolished in 2017 for countries in the EU and EEA based on EU law.


However, this law does not apply to Switzerland and free mobile phone roaming was never guaranteed for Switzerland. Whether roaming charges apply or not, depends on the respective plans offered by your mobile provider.
