In the summer of 1864, a St. Moritz hotelier made a bet with four English guests that they would enjoy the mild Engadin sunshine and the picturesque scenery even in winter. They arrived at Chrismas and stayed until Easter! They became the first winter tourists in the Alps and discovered a new world: winter holidays in the snow.
